On Quilted Wings

You were there with me
All the stories bestowed us
Family, work -
Daily in betweens

Inside joke we played
Boss always mixing us up
Swapping poetry
Editing stanzas and prose

You were there with me
Beach combing shells and stones
Forest or sea camping
Cellular moments engraved

Hiking all day
Through glorious heat
Bugs and sore muscles
Beautiful waterfall escape

You were there with me
Late night card games
Creating friendship bracelets
Planning future exploration trips

Before, during, and after the moves
Birthday celebration songs
Listening through shattered tears
Hawaiian Nightmare then Darkness to Daylight

You were there with me
Holding me still
Body withered with pain
As epi took it away

You asked me to come
Times before but could not
Asking again as time draws near
This time I could

Holding your hands
Eyes sparkling with grace
Seeing through them silently asking me
Carry on your legacy of floral inspiration

Now it's my time to be there for you
Silently resounding yes while holding you
Go soar freely with beautiful quilted wings
Knowing you will always be loved.
